Our latest course has just gone live. It's from best-selling historian and author Toni Mount and is narrated by best-selling author Claire Ridgway and it's called "England's Crime and Punishment through the Ages".
This course is a bit different from our others, in that it takes participants through the history of crime and punishment in England, from the Anglo-Saxons through to the Victorians, and we love that Toni uses real-life cases and stories of daring crimes and escapes, plus a little witchcraft! It's not just educational, it's entertaining! We'll be meeting Sir Thomas Mallory, Dick Turpin, Moll Cutpurse, Jonathan Wild, Jack the Ripper, Matthew Hopkins, Mary Ann Cotton and more...
In this video, Toni introduces her course and we hope that she piques your interest. You can find out more about the course at medievalcourses.com/overview/englands-crime-punishment-ages-mc07/
"England's Crime and Punishment through the Ages" explores crime and punishment in England over 1,300 years of social change, from the Anglo-Saxons to the Victorians. Sometimes barbaric, sometimes surprisingly enlightened, this is the story of the evolution of the justice system. Did you know the Anglo-Saxons allowed wives to divorce their husbands, if they were unhappy with the marriage, and take half the property with them? This civilised attitude was not reinstated in England until the 20th century. Did you know that one notorious highwayman was actually a woman, that animals could be found guilty of murder and that the art of fingerprinting was first used in India so illiterate people could 'sign' documents?
